ICT and vocational training: What does the private sector really need?

One of the challenges in vocational training is the relevance of careers and subjects offered. While visiting Kenya I found that a vocational training centre offered tailoring class to 4 students. Meanwhile, a nearby centre offered courses in computer training and secretarial services were overloaded with each 50 students. How can we achieve that young people follow careers with a real job opportunity?

ICT for Agriculture: What does the farmer want?

Despite participatory design of programs, we still make the wrong assumptions about what farmers want. Even after supporting over 50 projects and programs related to ICT and agriculture, I have to be careful not to take a short cut and assume. In this blog I will share some of my experiences with starting projects in agriculture. A simple advice: whenever starting a new project. DO NOT ASSUME. Go, see, sit, listen and talk. Take your time. Despite the seriously rising number of unemployed youth in developing countries, it is hard to find skilled and responsible carpenters, plumbers, secretaries, auto mechanics or someone to actually solve your regular computer problems.
